Understanding how to design an effective website is one of the most important skills that you can learn. The reason for this is that a website that does not convert at all will not make you any money.
The most important part is to create one that will get a lot of traffic. There are many webmasters who simply do not do this effectively at all. Basically you need to do keyword research. You can use tools like Wordtracker and Keyword Discovery. The key is to find words that have a lot of traffic with very little competition.
Once you have found these you need to optimize your site. Primarily your home page will be for a keyword that gets a lot of traffic. Most of your incoming links will point to your home page. So this will be the page that is most likely to get the best rankings. You will the design your content around all the keywords that you have found. I suggest that you try to find at least 30 or more.
Create a navigation structure with links on your home page to these. If you are successful in getting good quality one way links to your website you will find that you will attract a lot free search engine traffic.
Also make sure that your site loads very quickly. Any site that takes longer than 10 seconds will lose most of its visitors. Ensure that you funnel all your links to your high converting products. In reality you will find that only a few products will actually convert very well.
